Auction committee to give away a $100 visa gift card!!!

Now that I have your attention! This year to help the Auction Committee with obtaining items for the auction, they are adding a little incentive to those who get donations.

They will conduct drawings for a pair of tickets to the auction. They will also have a drawing at the auction for a $100 visa gift card. You must be present to win the gift card.

So, how do you get the $100 gift card, you ask?

For each item you donate or get donated to the auction your name will be entered into the drawings, this includes items donated to your class baskets.

It is that simple. So, as you are out and about go ahead and ask those business owners you frequent or know personally for a donation, it could get you $100.

Class basket items need to be taken to your class room. Staff will have logs for you to register for the drawing. Items not for class baskets but for the general auction can be left in the office for pick-up by the auction committee, or for large items contact LeeAnn DelMonte, at email leeann1963@yahoo.com, or Ginger Gardiner, at email glgardiner@aol.com. Room parents will be notifying you of your class room basket theme for the 2012 auction.

We only have 6 weeks. So bring in those items!

The largest fundraiser of the year is upon us!

This year's auction promises to be exciting! Ginger Gardiner, who was responsible for the auction decorations last year, has agreed to co-chair the auction this year, with plans to chair next year. Ginger brings fresh ideas, vision and a renewed excitment to this important event for our community. I look forward to working with her and passing the tourch onto her for an event I have been so passionate about over the past 8 years.

The auction is scheduled for February 18th at the Whitehurst Lake House in Pactolus. Item pre-view, food served, and the bar will open at 5 p.m. Tickets are available in the office for $20 per person and $35 per couple. Tickets at the door will be $25.

We auction off 75-100 items. All items are donated from local merchants and community members.

Our auctioneer this year will be Dr. Kirk Harris assisted by Mrs. Dale Baker. Ms. Stacey VanDermeenden will present the items. Heavy h'orderves will be prepared by Creations by Chrislyn. We will also be serving BBQ pork prepared by Mr. joey Godard. Our desserts will be prepared by parents of our students. There will be two of each, one for us to enjoy and one for a talented bidder to take home.

Our theme for this year is Luau! A prize will be presented for the best dressed to theme!

Kids Fest Committee - volunteers needed

If you would like to volunteer to serve on the Kids Fest Committee, please plan to attend the first meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 3:30 in the middle school. If you can't attend the meeting, but are interested in helping in any of the following areas or in serving as a co-chair, jot me an email at dlstamant@gmail.com.

1. Flags -- inventory, assemble (drill holes in pvc pipe)

2. Food -- someone to cater main dish, someone to oversee serving and set up, someone to oversee kitchen clean up

3. Passport/stamps -- someone to make the passports (or make sure they are made) and make sure each teacher has a stamp and pad

4. Advertising -- banners, brochures, white boards, media

5. Set up/clean up -- someone to oversee volunteers for set up and clean up

6. Shopping/donations (paper products, etc)

7. Costumes -- if you sew and would like to offer your assistance to one of the classrooms please contact your room parent! If your room parent is all set, and you'd be willing to help with another classroom's costumes, please contact me!

Thank you to everyone for supporting our Barnes & Noble Spirit Night as well as our Scholastic Book Fair. Both events were huge successes and our final totals are $1003 from Barnes and Noble and $1117.05 from Scholastic! The money from both fundraisers is 100% for the teachers for classroom use! WMPCS will be walking in the Washington Christmas parade on Saturday December 3. We are hoping that our group will be the largest in the parade. We are asking that participants wear a spirit shirt if possible. Thank you for coming out to Barnes and Noble to support our school! A special thank you to Tour Group and to our middle school greeters. I hope the little ones enjoyed story hour, and I'm sorry we weren't able to serve hot chocolate because the cafe was overwhelmed. Barnes and Noble will provide more workers in the cafe next time to resolve this issue!

Dinner Theater

The 6th years' annual dinner theatre: American cuisine featuring soups, breads, and desserts. Mrs. Lilley's class presenting "The Oregon Trail," Mrs. Prescott's class presenting "Immigration: First Stop Ellis Island," and Ms. Godard's class "Pearl Harbor." To be held at First Baptist Church, Washington. It is on the corner of Harvey and Main Street. Dinner will begin to be served at 6:oo p.m. this Thursday, October 27th, followed by the plays which will begin at approximately 6:45 to 7:00ish. Cost is $7 per ticket or $25 for a family (includes dinner). All proceeds help offset costs of the 6th years' end-of-the-year trip to Williamsburg, Va. Please come and support our 6th graders!

Second Annual MS Yard Sale.

The Middle School students will be having their second annual yard sale October 22. If you have items you would like to donate please drop them off in the MS room on October 21. Due to space restrictions we can not store items prior to the 21st. The proceeds will help the students fund their out of class experiences the 2011/2012 school year. Thanks to the WMPCS community for the support of the Middle School.

Middle School out of class experiences - An out of class experience has the potential to unite manual and intellectual work, showing them to be complementary components on the path toward a “civilized existence.” There is no more complete lesson than those that can be found in camping, service projects, urban and farm studies. Here students reinforce their content material with its practical application while continuing to develop their skills as part of humanity. Students develop feelings of empathy and understanding, altruism, community, independence, and interdependence. The fragile state of an adolescent is nurtured and supported while the student continues to gain the skills and confidence of adulthood.

Auction Proceed Ideas

At the community meeting we came up five ideas for the unused 2010-11 auction proceeds: 1. School sign on 264, 2. ice machine for classroom, MPTO and event use, 3. landscaping, 4. covering the deck (pavilion), and 5. kindle/nook library. The community chose to research the top three ideas, which after a vote were the sign, the ice machine, and the landscaping. These ideas are being researched and details will be presented at the next community meeting in November. WMPCS Scavenger Hunt registrations are due to the WMPCS office or mailed in by February 22, 2011. The Scavenger Hunt will take place Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 12 noon at Goose Creek Park. For more information, go to the WMPCS website or get a registration at the school office. All age levels are invited to join us for an afternoon of hiking, enjoying the outdoors, competition, and fun! If anyone knows a contractor that could help us accomplish this goal, please forward the contact information to me. Once I get the financial information and the contractor talks with Mr. Jones on what is possible, Mr. Jones will take this information to the BoT for their input and approval. I will keep you updated on that process.

WMPCS Scavenge hunt

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED PLEASE

For the WMPCS Scavenge hunt at Goose Creek on March 5th, 2011. It starts at noon and runs until 3pm. (we'll prob. need help anytime 10-4 )

We need people the "day of" the event to check in people, to audit the scavenge, to give out prizes, serve cake among other things.

We need people beforehand to spread the word and encourage your friends, family, neighbors to get teams together and come on out (reg/info form on wmpcs website)- It's going to be a blast!

Pizza Night

Mark your calendars for March 7, 5-8 p.m.. WMPCS will be hosting Pizza Night at Pizza Inn in Washington. We will receive 10% of your purchase when you let them know you are with WMPCS upon arrival. If we fill the Patio area, and overflow into the main restaurant we will then receive 10% of all sales that night. Come out and have some Pizza and enjoy each others company. Funding Factory Collections

If you got a new cell phone for Christmas please consider bringing in your old one for us to recycle through the Funding Factory Program. Also, if your home or place of work/business throws away their used up ink cartridges we will recycle them too. Our Giving Project for the Holidays this year was a gift to….

The student’s met their goal of $1,100 for the "Joy to the World Gift Basket" which included 2 sheep, 4 goats, 1 heifer, and 2 llamas. Total donations were $1167.00. Remaining funds were also given to the Heiffer Foundation. Thank- you to all who gave!!!

For many prospective parents, Open House is their first exposure to our school. After a brief overview, there is time for questions. Our classrooms are open and our teachers are available to share with parents the difference a Montessori education can make in the life of a child. We recognize and value the commitment of time and effort of these parents to learn about our school and the Montessori Philosophy to make an educated decision. Heifer Project

We did it!! A big thank you to the staff, students, and WMPCS Community for helping us reach our goal of $1500.00 to go towards the "Joy to the World Basket" Heifer gift. It will allow a group of families in an undeveloped region of the world the following: two sheep, four goats, one heifer and two llamas. These animals will provide families milk, wool, fertilizer, and precious commodities that will raise money needed for food, clothing, medicine, and school tuition.

Skate outing permission slip

On the right is a printable permission form for the skate outing on December 17th. The fee is $12 per student. Please send lunch with your student. We will eat lunch on campus. We will arrive at the skate track approximately 1:00 p.m. the students will skate from 1 until 4. A light snack of popcorn and a drink will be served. Skate rental is included. We will return to the campus around 5 p.m. Please pick your student(s) up on campus. Students will not be dismissed from the skate track.

The Middle School is selling links to help Chloe Alligood's family pay for her medical costs as she awaits to receive a liver transplant. Our goal is to sell enough links to stretch around the campus from the MS building along the sidewalk to the 9-12 building. The cost is 10 cents per link. Washington Christmas Flotilla

Collection for the Heifer Project

Our community support this year will focus on an international non-profit group called The Heifer Project- This is a school wide event beginning Nov. 22nd - Dec. 2nd. The schools goal is to collect $1,500.00 to purchase the "Joy to the World" gift, which includes 2 sheep, 4 goats, 1 cow, and 2 llamas that will provide a family somewhere in the world the means to produce an income, milk for nourishment, wool for warmth, and fertilizer to help grow crops. Please send your donation with your student, they will be collected in the class rooms.

All are welcome to Washington Montessori Public Charter School’s Scavenger Hunt taking place at Goose Creek State Park 2190 Camp Leach Road, Washington, NC
March 5th 2010 12-3 pm
(Team RSVPs and Payments are due by February 22, 2010)

All teams must register to participate

All age levels are invited to join us for an afternoon of hiking, enjoying the outdoors, scavenging, competition & fun. To respect the park, scavenge finds will be photographed, not collected. You do not have to be a member of the WMPCS community to participate.

Make a Scavenge Team! Invite your friends, family, classmates, scout groups, teachers, coworkers and anyone else to join us!

All teams must have a minimum of three participants and

Team Captains must be 18 years old or older. Teams can have as many members as they’d like.

There will be fantastic prizes for the winning scavenger hunt teams and also for the team who shows the best Scavenger Team pride!

Each Scavenger Hunt Team will need a digital camera. Wear comfortable walking shoes & bring a water bottle.

$5 Fee for each scavenger participant

Eagle's Ink Submissions

Hi Everyone,

Plans for the new Washington Montessori Public Charter School's literary magazine THE EAGLE'S INK are well underway. The students participated in the 1st Annual Washington Book Walk on November 6th. They met several nationally acclaimed authors and poets, and will be inviting some of those same authors to attend their own fundraising event in late January. Follow this blog to see the details in the near future.

Next Friday between 9:30 and 10:15 the literary club will be stopping by your classroom to make a short presentation about THE EAGLE'S INK to you and your students, and to give you all of the details about how to make submissions to the magazine.

We are also seeking donations of skill of anyone who might be able to help with logo making, layout, or have special knowledge of publishing. We are also seeking businesses who might be able to support us financially by purchasing advertising the the magazine, making a financial contribution, or a donation of in-kind services.

Musical Holiday Concert

Our Holiday Concert will be held at Washington High School Auditorium Friday, Dec. 10th at 6:30pm.

All violin students are to arrive at 6:00 pm to tune their instruments. All other students arrive by 6:15 pm. Admission is free. All WMPCS students will be included in the performances. Students are to wear uniforms for the performance. We want the focus to be on our gift of Holiday Music.

Mrs. Rhem has requested that all violin students bring their instruments daily to school to practice for the Christmas Concert.

**WHS no longer permits refreshments so this year will just be a gift of music!

We Would Like to Hear From You

Each family will receive a WMPCS Community Climate Survey which will be brought home by students on Thursday, October 28, 2010. Please complete the survey and return to the school by November 4th. There will be boxes for completed surveys located in each WMPCS building and one on the Greenville bus for your convenience. There will also be parent volunteers collecting the surveys at the school during drop off and pick up times on November 3rd and 4th. Your comments, ideas and input are strongly encouraged. The survey results will be compiled by parent volunteers and a summary will be presented at the Board of Trustees meeting on Nov. 18, 2010 and at the Community Meeting on Dec. 2, 2010.

6th Grade Dinner Theatre

When: Thursday, October 28, 2010, 6-8pm

Cost: $7.00 per person with a $25.00 per family max ($3.00 per student actor/actress)

From 6-6:45pm, a dinner will be served. The menu will have a Greek theme as well with Greek/Caesar salads, chicken and rice soup, minestrone soup, and Greek meatball soup and bread with honey puffs, chocolate baklava, or Greek Chocolate nut cake for dessert and tea or water to drink.

Road Closures

As of Sunday afternoon through the Pitt County Sheriff's Dept., Hwy. 264 between Greenville and Washington is still closed. Mobley's Bridge Road near Foster Road and Lake Kristi is also closed. Hwy. 33 between Greenville and Chocowinity is open, while Clarks Neck and Grimesland Bridge Roads is uncertain for Monday.
