BASC - Before and After School Care
Beautification Day - Two days per year, the Saturday before school starts and the Saturday before KidsFest the parents come to the campus and weed gardens, plant new plants in the flower beds, fix items in need of repair, ect.
BoT - Board of Trustees
CIA - Community Involvement Activities - Washington Montessori holds Community Involvement Activities (CIA) each month. Watch the monthly FYI for dates and times. Parents are encouraged to attend these meetings (Community Meetings, Parent Education, Parent Conferences, Family Events, etc.).
Community Meeting - A meeting called of all community members by the Administration of the school.
Day School - Washington Montessori Public Charter School also hosts a private day school for children ages 3 and 4 years old. The Day School is tuition based and requires an application fee.
Kids Fest - A showcase of the students' studies throughout the year. A celebration of our place in the "Global" picture. Held in April.
Lottery - At a public lottery applications are selected by grade. First, siblings of currently enrolled, registered and attending students are given available slots in the appropriate grade. If a slot in the appropriate grade is not available for a sibling, that child is put at the top of the waiting list for that grade. Each new student application is then randomly drawn. Once all available slots for a grade are filled, the remaining applications are drawn to determine their order on the waiting list for that grade. For example, if there are 35 slots available for Kindergarten and there are 5 siblings and 35 applications, the first 5 slots are filled by the siblings, then the first 30 applications drawn are assigned the remaining available slots. The remaining 5 applications are then drawn and occupy slots 1 - 5 on the Kindergarten waiting list. Currently enrolled students are not required to reapply or to participate in the lottery. Each school year, prior to the lottery, parents of enrolled students are required to complete an "Intent to Re-Enroll" form to hold their child's slot for the upcoming school year.
Middle School out of class experiences - An out of class experience has the potential to unite manual and intellectual work, showing them to be complementary components on the path toward a “civilized existence.” There is no more complete lesson than those that can be found in camping, service projects, urban and farm studies. Here students reinforce their content material with its practical application while continuing to develop their skills as part of humanity. Students develop feelings of empathy and understanding, altruism, community, independence, and interdependence. The fragile state of an adolescent is nurtured and supported while the student continues to gain the skills and confidence of adulthood.
MPTO - Montessori Parent Teacher Organization. All members of the WMPCS community are automatically members of the MPTO with no dues owed.
MPTO Board meeting - The monthly business meeting held by the MPTO, all community members are WELCOME!
MPTO General Meeting - A meeting called by the the HoS, all community members may attend, usually held at the same time as a community meeting. One in the Fall and one in the Spring.
MS - Middle School or 12-15 level
Red Plate Day - One day a month the parents of each classroom volunteer to help in the class for two hours so the staff may leave campus for lunch. Organized by the room parents.
Room Parent - Each classroom has a room parent to organize volunteers needed to support that classroom.
Volunteer hours - Each family is asked to volunteer 20 hours per school year. This includes all meetings attended, field trips they drive on, beautification days, any MPTO event they help with, helping the teachers in their classrooms, ect.
Walk Around the Sun - This is the manner in which WMPCS celebrates birrthdays. This process takes the child through each year with a picture and any memories from each year that you may want to share. Contact your teacher to schedule this special event for your student.
